Transforming Thorngrove House: A Social Value Day Success

In February, a remarkable team effort took place at Thorngrove House in Manchester as part of Your Housing Group’s (YHG) Social Value Day. The day focused on making Thorngrove House a safer and cleaner environment for its residents, workers, and visitors. The event was part of YHG’s High Rise Safety Programme, which aims to enhance the living conditions and safety in high-rise communities across the area.

A team effort to make a difference

The day’s event was led by the enthusiastic staff volunteers from YHG’s ICT Team, who worked tirelessly to clear the site of broken planters, fly-tipped waste, and litter. Together, they filled a skip with debris, removed 11 bags of litter, and cleared the area of various unwanted items that had accumulated over time. Their hard work transformed the outdoor space, making it a much more welcoming and tidy environment for all.

The effort was not only a testament to the determination of the volunteers but also to the spirit of collaboration within the community. Special thanks were given to the Community Investment Team for facilitating the event and to the local Housing Management Team for their support. Additionally, Acumen Waste played a crucial role in providing a skip free of charge, ensuring that the waste could be efficiently removed without costing the residents or YHG.

The importance of social value

The project at Thorngrove House is an excellent example of how social value programmes can have a positive and lasting impact on the community. The event was inspired by a safety walk around the site, where a resident reported the presence of rotten, disused raised beds and litter around the estate. By responding quickly to this concern and clearing the space, YHG has not only improved the appearance of the area but also created a safer, cleaner environment for all who live, work, or visit there.

Karl Evans, Service Manager at Acumen, also took the opportunity to provide a brief toolbox talk to the staff, explaining Acumen’s services and how they support day-to-day waste disposal as well as special projects like the Social Value Day initiative. The discussion highlighted the positive impact of such initiatives on local communities, and how Acumen is proud to support these efforts through its waste management expertise.

A safer, cleaner Thorngrove House

The transformation of Thorngrove House is a perfect example of how collective effort and dedication can create real change in communities. Thanks to the hard work of the volunteers, the cooperation between YHG’s teams, and Acumen’s support, the estate is now a cleaner, safer, and more inviting place for everyone.

As a result of this team effort, the local residents can now enjoy their surroundings with greater peace of mind, knowing that their concerns were addressed, and their living space has been improved. Social value initiatives like this one are a key part of fostering stronger, more connected communities, and Acumen is proud to play a role in making that happen.

On Tuesday 18th February, a Safety Guardians session took place at Thorngrove House as a part of our high rise safety programme. Magnificent seven staff volunteers from Your Housing Group’s ICT Team attended the event and worked liked trojans to remove a skip load of broken planters, 11 bags of litter and various fly tipping. Special thanks also go to the Community Investment Team for facilitating the event, along with the local Housing Management Team, and of course our approved supplier Acumen for the provision of a free skip. The background to the event stems from a High Rise Site Safety Walk around the block when a resident reported rotten disused raised beds in need of clearance as well as littering around the local estate. Now thanks to this great team effort, Thorngrove House is now a safer and cleaner place for everyone to live, work and visit.
