Acumen Provide Bespoke Multi Site Waste Services to Maximise Efficiencies for the Places for People Group
Places for People is a non-profit organisation supplying and maintaining over 180,000 homes, along with 50 leisure centres, providing services to more than 500,000 people across the UK. Acumen have been working collaboratively with Places for People since 2010 and the relationship will continue for a further 4 years within a second contract term.
Changes in Waste Type and Volume
Acumen had originally provided a customer-specified single 35yrd open skip for mixed municipal waste at the site at Westwood Nursery in Brindle, for an extended period. The skip was collected on up to twice weekly, generally consisting of mixed waste and Places for People assured Acumen that the service worked well for the site.
After carrying out a scheduled site audit, Acumen discovered that the characteristics of majority of the waste being disposed of had changed, and there was an increase in biodegradable waste including green landscaping wastes and timber. Similarly, through the ongoing support and open communication / constant review of management information, it was identified that a specific location was producing more waste volumes than the forecasted quantities. Therefore, an extra container exchange was introduced to ensure there was no overspill.
Recycling & the Environment
Acumen sourced an additional disposal and recycling outlet to increase the recyclability of the material and introduced several skips on site to facilitate waste segregation. The appropriate containers for green waste, general waste, wood and dry mixed recycling were provided as well as on-site training to the staff and clear site signage to act as a visual aid to site waste segregation.
The result was Acumen reduced the waste disposal cost on site by 50% and increased the recycling rate by 60%.
