Acumen Trials Waste Diversion from Landfill to Recycling and Repurposing Centre
Acumen is currently working with one of our recycling partners on a trial waste recycling project for a building refurbishment manufacturer in Aberdare which looks set to massively reduce the waste produced by the business.
The Project
Working alongside the team at Acumen a national window frame, door, and facia board manufacturing facility has launched a three-month trial on a new waste recycling project which looks set to deliver a massive reduction in the waste produced by the business.
Currently, the site produces a considerable amount of waste (around 3×35 yards³ containers of waste for landfill per week) and their overall aim was to see baled bulk lifting bags, cardboard, polythene film and blown uPVC being disposed of in a sustainable way.
How Acumen Are Helping
Acumen and our recycling partner jumped straight to action. We considered our options for the most energy efficient removal of this waste that allowed the biggest quantity of waste to be recycled and put the plan in to play. After careful consideration a decision was reached for all of the waste to be sent to one recycling site except for the uPVC waste. As a synthetic polymer of plastic used for window frames and facias eighty-three percent of uPVC is sent directly to landfill despite the material being recyclable many times over before a reduction in its quality.
Taking in to account the recyclability of the uPVC products we chose to granulate the facility’s blown uPVC before sending it to a highly innovative uPVC recycling centre in France that will use the uPVC to make 100% recycled products, allowing the client’s material to become fully circular.
The Outcome
Although still in its early stages this project is looking extremely positive and we’re excited to see the full impact this initiative will have. Our team is continually collecting the recycled waste from a stand trailer when it is at capacity to dispose of efficiently and effectively and after this three-month trial we will be able to evaluate the full project and calculate the volume of waste removed from landfill.
