28% of people living in London throw away over 10% of their fruit and veg purchases each week according to a new report undertaken by It’s Fresh, with the national average figure now rising to 22%.

More alarming, 37% of Londoners admitted to throwing their food waste away with their general waste as there is no separate provisions to dispose of their food wastage. Guilt levels were over half however as 51% felt bad for throwing it away in that manner, whilst 32% of people said they felt upset at throwing away fresh fruit and veg.

Around 50% of the UK’s food waste total, which is just over 7 million tonnes, derives from the home, equating to around £470 worth of food being needlessly discarded every year by the average household.

Age demographics play key role

It’s Fresh’s research also discovered that across the UK, a staggering 92% of 18-24 year olds throw away fruit and veg each week, which is 17% more than the UK average (75%) and 30% more than those aged 65+ (62%).
