Earlier this month the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), announced that a new Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) compliance fee is being set for 2017 at a rate of £3.50 per tonne of waste. The charge will help local authorities factor in the service when preparing bids for collection contracts as well as go towards the costs of managing operational contracts.

The amount was confirmed after a consultation process had taken place, which involved gathering feedback on the proposed fee from local authorities, waste management companies, professional bodies, producers and Producer Compliance Schemes (PCSs). In total, 30 responses were submitted, with 28 of them supporting a compliance charge for the 2017 compliance year.
